Il 25 novembre l'Onu celebra "Giornata internazionale contro la violenza sulle donne". Quella sulle donne è la forma di violenza più diffusa, senza confini di ambiente, religione, cultura e nazionalità. Lo dimostra la statistica e lo conferma la cronaca. Sono centinaia le donne che ogni anno vengono uccise dalla violenza ed una donna su tre subisce violenza fisica o sessuale nel corso della propria vita.

La data del 25 novembre fu scelta in ricordo del brutale assassinio del 1960 delle tre sorelle Mirabal, considerate esempio di donne rivoluzionarie per l'impegno con cui tentarono di contrastare il regime di Rafael Leónidas Trujillo (1930-1961), il dittatore Repubblica Dominicana nell'arretratezza e nel caos per oltre 30 anni.

Dall'inizio del 2012, in Italia, sono state 115 le donne uccise, di queste 74 vittime di mariti i fidanzati. Nel nostro paese la violenza domestica è la prima causa di morte per le donne tra i 16 e 44 anni.
