PSS - the gun is silent (GRAU index 6P28, during the development it received the designation “Vul”) the pistol was developed from 1979 to 1983. The MSS is designed to arm KGB and military intelligence personnel who needed silent and self-loading weapons. If you compare the MSS “Vul” with other samples of the “traditional” silent weapon, such as PB, it is noticeable that the MSS will be small in size, which makes it most convenient for hidden carrying.
An uncharacteristic length, for silent weapons, was achieved using special SP-4 cartridges, the cutoff of powder gases in which occurs inside the sleeve. The use of such cartridges made it possible to abandon the large and heavy silencers used on silent weapons. In comparison with the previously released weapons, under special silent cartridges (MSP, S-4M), the highest rate of fire is provided due to the self-loading mechanism with a detachable magazine for six rounds used in PSS pistols. This gun was developed by designers Krasnikov, Levchenko, Medvetsky and Petrov in TsNIITochMash in the city of Klimovsk.
Due to the use of an unusual cartridge, the design of the gun is also unique. The automatic circuit of the gun consists of a free shutter, while a return spring is located on the guide rod, inside the shutter above the barrel. The gun barrel is made up of two parts - movable and stationary. Movable is located in the longitudinal plane of the chamber, motionless is a threaded part of the barrel. Under the chamber there is a return spring, and it has the ability to roll back approximately 8 millimeters. When the bullet flies out of the sleeve, at the moment of the shot, and cuts into the grooves of the front part of the barrel, the pressure of the powder gases closed in the sleeve between the pallet shoving the bullet and the bottom of the sleeve shoves the sleeve together with the chamber holding it back and also moves the shutter with it. The chamber, after being rolled back by 8 millimeters, stops, resting on the frame of the weapon, and the bolt retrieves the spent sleeve and throws it out, moving by inertia. The chamber is returned to the forward position, under the action of a return spring. The shutter catches the chamber with its special protrusion on the inner surface, at the end of the rollback, and due to its additional mass, as well as the strength of the return spring, the shutter is smoothly silently braking, reducing the metal clang of the parts. Another useful property of the gun is that due to the depressurization of the barrel behind the bullet, the powder gases do not leave the sleeve. Otherwise, at the time of the bullet's departure, the reduced pressure that arose behind the bullet would give additional cotton bursting into the barrel of atmospheric air.

ПСС – пистолет бесшумный (индекс ГРАУ 6П28, в ходе разработки получил обозначение «Вул») разработка пистолета велась с 1979 по 1983 год. ПСС предназначен для вооружения персонала КГБ и военной разведки, которые нуждались в бесшумном и самозарядном оружии. Не характерная длина, для бесшумного оружия, была достигнута при помощи использования специальных патронов СП-4 отсечка пороховых газов в которых происходит внутри гильзы. Использование таких патронов дало возможность отказаться от больших и тяжелых глушителей, используемых на бесшумном оружии. В сравнении с образцами оружия выпущенными ранее, под специальные бесшумные патроны (МСП, С-4М), за счет самозарядного механизма с отъемным магазином на шесть патронов, используемого в пистолетах ПСС, обеспечивается наиболее высокая скорострельность. Данный пистолет разработан конструкторами Красниковым, Левченко, Медвецким и Петровым в ЦНИИТочМаш в городе Климовске.

Патронник после того как откатывается на 8 миллиметров – останавливается, упершись в рамку оружия, а затвор извлекает стрелянную гильзу и выбрасывает ее, двигаясь по инерции. Патронник возвращается в переднее положение, под действием возвратной пружины. Затвор своим специальным выступом на внутренней поверхности цепляет патронник, в конце отката, и благодаря своей добавочной массе, а также силе возвратной пружины, происходит плавное бесшумное торможение затвора, снижающее металлический лязг деталей. Еще одно полезное свойство пистолета - это то, что благодаря разгерметизации ствола за пулей пороховые газы гильзу не покидают. Иначе бы, в момент вылета пули, возникшее за пулей пониженное давление давало бы дополнительный хлопок, врывающегося в ствол атмосферного воздуха.
