FBI explosives specialist gets 3.5 years for telling unnecessary reporters

Former U.S. FBI bomber Donald Zahtleben pleaded guilty to transmitting classified information about a terrorist attack in Yemen to reporters of the Associated Press, writes The New York Times.
In May 2012, Zakhtleben handed over to the agency information about an operation against al-Qaeda militants who were trying to carry out an attack on board an aircraft in Yemen. FBI employees went to a former explosives specialist after intercepting a telephone conversation of one of the newspaper’s journalists.
Sahtleben, 55, who worked at the FBI from 1983 to 2008, pleaded guilty and agreed to cooperate with the investigation. Now he will spend 3.5 years in prison.
Along with this, a criminal case related to child pornography was opened against a former FBI employee. During the search, photographs and videos containing scenes of child abuse were found in his house. In this case, Zahtleben also pleaded guilty. In this case, he faces eight years in prison.
The Zakhtleben case is the eighth case involving a leak of classified information during the reign of the Barack Obama administration. However, only three such cases occurred under previous presidents of the United States.

Бывший взрывотехник ФБР США Дональд Захтлебен признал вину в передаче журналистам Associated Press засекреченной информации о сорванном теракте в Йемене, пишет The New York Times.
В мае 2012 года Захтлебен передал агентству данные об операции против боевиков "Аль-Каиды", пытавшихся осуществить теракт на борту самолета в Йемене. Сотрудники ФБР вышли на бывшего специалиста по взрывчатым веществам после перехватов телефонного разговора одного из журналистов издания.
55-летний Захтлебен, который работал в ФБР с 1983 по 2008 г., признал свою вину и согласился сотрудничать со следствием. Теперь он проведет 3,5 года в тюрьме.
Вместе с этим в отношении бывшего сотрудника ФБР было возбуждено уголовное дело, связанное с детской порнографией. Во время обыска в его доме были найдены фотографии и видеозаписи, содержащие сцены насилия над детьми. В этом случае Захтлебен также признал себя виновным. По этому делу ему грозит восемь лет лишения свободы.
Дело Захтлебена является восьмым случаем, связанным с утечкой секретной информации, за время правления администрации Барака Обамы. При этом только три подобных случая произошли при предыдущих президентах США.
