We ask people with weak nerves and children not to watch this story.
Not every day, the host of the Vremya program on the First Channel of Russian Television speaks to viewers with such words. However, this time he was obliged to warn the audience. Shown frames shocked.
An outdoor surveillance camera installed on a street in the Chinese city of Foshan, Guangdong Province, recorded a moment when a white minibus with poorly readable numbers knocked down a small child. He finds himself under the wheels of a car that stops.
The further development of events looks so monstrous that it seems a cinematic dramatization. Instead of going out and helping the injured child, who, as seen on the film, shows signs of life, the driver suddenly starts moving again. And the white minivan drives a helpless, baby carriage spread out on a dirty road with its rear wheels. And again, minute by minute, the camera impartially records how mopeds, motorbikes, and cyclists pass by the babies lying across the road. It is noticeable that some of the drivers slow down, carefully inspect the scene of the incident, hesitate a little and ... go on.
Then a small truck appears on the screen. His driver, not stopping, moves across the child, as if crossing over a curb. And calmly leaves. Only a woman who was cleaning garbage on the street pulled the body of a dying baby from the roadway.
After a while, a woman ran out of a nearby store. As if not believing her eyes, she bent down to the girl on the side of the road, grabbed her in her arms, and then, realizing what had happened, fell to her knees, choking with sobs. All. The film is interrupted. As bloggers later calculated, 18 people passed and drove past a dying girl. None stopped to help her.
In the Chinese media, the mother of the child appears under the name Que. According to her, she left the child alone in the family shop, and she went to wash her clothes. Two-year-old Yue Yue became bored, and she went for a walk, almost immediately finding herself on the roadway.
Only one person - 57-year-old garbage and junk collector Chen Xianmei - trembled when she saw a baby lying on the road. She did not pass, like others, by. But all her calls to sellers standing nearby and passers-by for help were not heard. All just "with interest" watched as the child dies, and an elderly woman unsuccessfully tries to find her parents. Some at the same time advised her not to get into her own business, but to continue collecting garbage.
Police found the truck drivers who had moved to Yue Yue. One of them was detained by law enforcement officers, the other came with confession. And before going to the police, he literally said the following: “If the girl dies, then I will pay only 20 thousand yuan ($ 3.1 thousand), and if I remain alive, I will have to pay for her treatment, and that’s hundreds and hundreds of thousands of yuan. I don’t have that much money! " Naturally, there was no question of any remorse. Just think, distracted from the road, chatting on the phone.
But not everything in this story is so simple. After living in China for several years, the RG correspondent repeatedly met people who helped completely disinterestedly. However, there were cases that those who were to receive a helping hand did not always turn out to be grateful. After the current tragedy, many in China recalled the so-called "Nanking Judge" case. This happened in 2006. The man helped an elderly woman who fell in the street and took her to the hospital. Then the victim wrote a statement to the police that the savior beat her. A judge from the city of Nanjing convicted a man, explaining the verdict by saying that the only one who thought of taking the woman to the hospital ... could only be the attacker himself.
Another notorious case is no less famous. In June, a death sentence was imposed on a young pianist studying at the Conservatory in Xi'an. He hit a woman riding a bicycle in a car. When she tried to remember the number of his car, the musician inflicted eight knife wounds on the victim. During interrogation, the detainee explained that he was afraid of the consequences of the accident: the woman was from the village and could demand huge compensation from him for the hitting.
If we talk about the characteristics of Chinese society, then today the cult of money-grubbing, perhaps, has reached its climax. It is no accident that the favorite phrase of modern youth was the statement of one of the heroines of the program like "Love at first sight": "I'd rather cry in a BMW than laugh on a bicycle."
"Old woman" Chen Xianmei received from the city administration an award of one and a half thousand dollars. And the child himself is in a military hospital in Guangzhou.
"What has humanity come to?" - this question, addressed to the viewers, by the host of the Vremya program asked at the end of the plot about the tragic fate of the girl Yue Yue. For our part, we also address this issue to readers of the Rossiyskaya Gazeta.
