RIGA, Jan 28 - RIA Novosti, Vadim Radionov. About 100 people gathered on Saturday at the Academy of Fine Arts in the center of Riga to celebrate the birthday of the literary character - the great detective Sherlock Holmes, a RIA Novosti correspondent reports.
Riga was the first city that decided to celebrate the birthday of the hero of the novels of the English writer Arthur Conan Doyle.
The initiators of the celebration, supported by the Riga City Council, considered that it was the capital of Latvia - where the shooting of Igor Maslennikov’s famous film “The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson” took place - should become the place where this day will be celebrated.
Near the building of the Academy of Arts, about 100 people gathered. Many were dressed in the costumes of Sherlock Holmes, Dr. Watson and Mrs. Hudson. After the photo shoot, disguised admirers of Conan Doyle's works went on a march in the center of Riga.
The writer Arthur Conan Doyle did not indicate the exact date of the birth of his hero, but this allegedly happened in January 1854. Therefore, on January 28, 2012, Riga decided for the first time to celebrate the 158th anniversary of Sherlock Holmes.
The celebration program will be concentrated in the area of Yauniel Street (Baker Street in the Maslennikov film), but it will cover the whole city and the places where other episodes of the film were shot.

РИГА, 28 янв — РИА Новости, Вадим Радионов. Около 100 человек собрались в субботу у здания Академии художеств в центре Риги, чтобы отметить День рождения литературного персонажа — великого сыщика Шерлока Холмса, сообщает корреспондент РИА Новости.
Рига стала первым городом, который решил отмечать день рождения героя романов английского писателя Артура Конан Дойла.
Инициаторы торжества, которых поддержала Рижская дума, посчитали, что именно столица Латвии — где проходили съемки известного фильма Игоря Масленникова «Приключения Шерлока Холмса и доктора Ватсона» — должна стать тем местом, где будут отмечать этот день.
Около здания Академии художеств собралось около 100 человек. Многие были одеты в костюмы Шерлока Холмса, доктора Ватсона и миссис Хадсон. После фотосессии переодетые почитатели произведений Конан Дойля отправились в шествие по центру Риги.
Точной даты рождения своего героя писатель Артур Конан Дойл не указал, но предположительно это случилось в январе 1854 года. Поэтому 28 января 2012 года Рига решила впервые отметить 158-летие Шерлока Холмса.
Программа празднования будет сосредоточена в районе улицы Яуниела (Бейкер-стрит в фильме Масленникова), однако охватит весь город и те места, где снимались другие эпизоды фильма.
