More than half of Russians (62%) believe that the death penalty is necessary in the Russian Federation. This is evidenced by the research of the Public Opinion Foundation.
The most common explanation for the desire to return the death penalty is the argument: “That it might be disgraceful for others.” Respondents also mentioned other reasons: "Prison does not correct criminals," "Taxpayer money is spent on the maintenance of life-sentenced prisoners," "This is the best way to defeat crime."
The survey also determined the crimes for which the death penalty should be applied: for sexual crimes against minors (72%), murders (64%), terrorism (54%), drug trafficking (28%) and high treason (12%).
Opinions that in Russia it is not worth lifting the moratorium on the death penalty are held by 21% of citizens. About 5% of Russians want a complete abolition of the death penalty.
Earlier in March, the execution of death sentences against “Minsk terrorists” received a wide public response. The decision of the Belarusian authorities was condemned by many Western countries. Belarus remains the only country in Europe where the death penalty is legalized.
