More than 80 Kalashnikov tank machine guns were stolen from one of the state enterprises in Kiev. This was reported by the press center of the military prosecutor's office of the central region of Ukraine.

What kind of enterprise in question is not specified in the message. It says that the weapon was stolen in 2010-2011. Some persons stole tank machine guns belonging to the Ministry of Defense of the Republic "through abuse of official position and official forgery." Subsequently, the weapon was sold. The amount of losses incurred by the state exceeded 1.15 million hryvnias (4.4 million Russian rubles).

The prosecutor's office opened a case under the articles “Assignment of property on an especially large scale”, “Theft, appropriation of firearms by abuse of official position” and “Service forgery”.

Another scandal involving the theft of weapons in Ukraine flared up in October last year in Lviv. From the building of the local university of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, 33 Kalashnikovs, 10 machine guns and pistols of various systems (totaling more than 80 units) were stolen. Conversion of the PKT tank machine gun into an infantry version

In the course of numerous local conflicts in the early 90s, in the territory of the former USSR, representatives of illegal armed groups created an acute demand for machine guns as the main means of supporting infantry. At the same time, the warring parties had a large number of PKT machine guns stolen in military units, taken out of combat or damaged armored vehicles. A small step in overcoming such a deficit should be considered a small-scale production of remodeling in the conditions of mechanical workshops of civilian profile PKT tank machine guns into an infantry version.

The conversion scheme, which was most widely used, was as follows:
- The electric trigger block was removed from the machine gun.
- A butt with a pistol grip made of a single piece of plastic or repeatedly glued layers of plywood was attached to the vacant space on the back plate of the receiver, with false steel plates behind the sides of the receiver with a riveted connection.
- The safety bar was removed, and the partially trimmed trigger was connected to a makeshift hook, under which a slot was cut out in the bottom of the receiver.
- A tin bracket with a bipod from a thick steel rod with pointed ends was bolted to the trunk gas outlet assembly.
- A projection with a front sight was attached to the barrel in front of the weld.
- A steel corner with a radial cutout, playing the role of an aiming bar, was attached to the receiver cover with a riveted connection.
Due to the maximum simplification of the remodeling process, the received machine guns did not have such elements of the PKM infantry machine gun as: a fire fuse, an arm for attaching a box with cartridges, a safety clip on the trigger, a holder on the bipod for the assembly ramrod, slots in the butt for the grease gun and for the canister with cleaning supplies. Due to such simplifications, the reworked PKT machine gun was inferior to the PKM in overall dimensions and weight, for the convenience of carrying in battle, for safety and for the accuracy of aimed fire. The only advantage of the converted PKT over PKM was the ability to conduct a more intense and prolonged fire, due to the presence of an elongated and heavier barrel.

Machine guns of this design were widely used during the Karabakh war, during the First and Second Chechen wars, in the Civil War in Tajikistan, in the South Ossetian War (1991-1992), in the Georgian-Abkhaz War (1992-1993).
