The catch phrase "Russians don't give up!" flew around the world during the First World War. During the defense of the small fortress of Osovets, located on the territory of present Belarus. The little Russian garrison needed only 48 hours to hold out. He defended himself for more than six months - 190 days!
The Germans used against the defenders of the fortress all the latest weapons achievements, including aviation. For each defender, several thousand bombs and shells fell. Discarded from airplanes and released from dozens of guns 17 batteries, including two of the famous "Big Bertha" (which the Russians managed to knock out at the same time).
The Germans bombed the fortress day and night. Month after month. The Russians defended themselves in the midst of a hurricane of fire and iron to the last. There were very few of them, but the proposals for surrender always followed the same answer. Then the Germans deployed 30 gas batteries against the fortress. A 12-meter wave of chemical attack hit the Russian positions from thousands of cylinders. There were no gas masks.
All life on the territory of the fortress was poisoned. Even the grass turned black and faded. A thick, poisonous-green layer of chlorine oxide coated the metal parts of the guns and shells. At the same time, the Germans began a massive shelling. Following him, more than 7,000 foot soldiers marched on to storm Russian positions.
It seemed that the fortress was doomed and already taken. The thick, numerous German chains were getting closer and closer ... And at that moment a poisonous attack fell upon them from a poisonous green chlorine fog ... a counterattack! There were a little more than sixty Russians. The remains of the 13th company of the 226th Zemlyansky regiment. For every counterattack, there were more than a hundred enemies!
The Russians walked to their full height. To the bayonet. Shaking from a cough, spitting out, through rags, wrapping their faces around, pieces of lungs on bloody tunics ...
These soldiers plunged the enemy into such horror that the Germans, not accepting the battle, rushed back. In a panic, stomping each other, tangled and hanging on their own barbed wire fences. And then, it seemed, already dead Russian artillery hit them from clubs of poisoned fog.
This battle will go down in history as the "attack of the dead." During its course, several dozen half-dead Russian soldiers took to flight 14 enemy battalions!
The Russian defenders of Osovets never surrendered the fortress. She was left later. And by order of the command. When the defense lost its meaning. Neither the cartridge nor the nail was left to the enemy. Everything that survived in the fortress from German fire and bombing was blown up by Russian sappers. The Germans decided to occupy the ruins only a few days later.

Крылатая фраза «Русские не сдаются!» облетела весь мир еще в годы Первой мировой войны. Во время обороны небольшой крепости Осовец, расположенной на территории нынешней Белоруссии. Маленькому русскому гарнизону требовалось продержаться лишь 48 часов. Он защищался более полугода – 190 дней!
Немцы применили против защитников крепости все новейшие оружейные достижения, включая авиацию. На каждого защитника пришлось несколько тысяч бомб и снарядов. Сброшенных с аэропланов и выпущенных из десятков орудий 17-ти батарей, включавших две знаменитых «Больших Берты» (которые русские ухитрились при этом подбить).
Немцы бомбили крепость день и ночь. Месяц за месяцем. Русские защищались среди урагана огня и железа до последнего. Их было крайне мало, но на предложения о сдаче всегда следовал один и тот же ответ. Тогда немцы развернули против крепости 30 газовых батарей. На русские позиции из тысяч баллонов ударила 12-метровая волна химической атаки. Противогазов не было.
Все живое на территории крепости было отравлено. Почернела и пожухла даже трава. Толстый ядовито-зеленый слой окиси хлора покрыл металлические части орудий и снарядов. Одновременно германцы начали массированный артобстрел. Вслед за ним на штурм русских позиций двинулись свыше 7000 пехотинцев.
Казалось, крепость обречена и уже взята. Густые, многочисленные немецкие цепи походили все ближе и ближе… И в этот момент из ядовито-зеленого хлорного тумана на них обрушилась… контратака! Русских было чуть больше шестидесяти. Остатки 13-й роты 226-го Землянского полка. На каждого контратакующего приходилось больше ста врагов!
Русские шли в полный рост. В штыковую. Сотрясаясь от кашля, выплевывая, сквозь тряпки обматывавшие лица, куски легких на окровавленные гимнастерки…
Эти воины повергли противника в такой ужас, что немцы, не приняв боя, ринулись назад. В панике топча друг друга, путаясь и повисая на собственных заграждениях из колючей проволоки. И тут по ним из клубов отравленного тумана ударила, казалось бы, уже мертвая русская артиллерия.
Это сражение войдет в историю как «атака мертвецов». В ходе ее несколько десятков полуживых русских воинов обратили в бегство 14 батальонов противника!
Русские защитники Осовца так и не сдали крепость. Она была оставлена позже. И по приказу командования. Когда оборона потеряла смысл. Врагу не оставили ни патрона, ни гвоздя. Все уцелевшее в крепости от немецкого огня и бомбежек было взорвано русскими саперами. Немцы решились занять руины только через несколько дней.
