Interpol conducted a special operation to curb the supply of counterfeit medicines to the territory of European countries. The operation, code-named "Pangea", lasted for a week and ended on Tuesday, September 27.
Most counterfeit products were produced at pharmaceutical companies in India and entered Europe through China. According to the British police, the websites on which it was possible to order fake drugs, controlled about 20 criminal groups, mostly Russian. Site management was carried out from Russia through Chinese proxy servers.
Police officers managed to find and close more than 13 thousand web pages where fake, expired or withdrawn medicines were sold. At the same time, visitors to such sites were free to purchase prescription drugs.
As a result of the special operation, law enforcement officers managed to seize about 2 million doses of various drugs in 79 countries. At the same time, half of the counterfeit drugs were seized in the UK. The estimated value of the confiscated property is estimated at five million pounds.
