In Berlin, the first part of the complex of buildings was commissioned, in which the German Federal Intelligence Service moves from Bavarian Pullach.

On Berlin street Schossestrasse - the continuation of the famous Friedrichstrasse - they are preparing to celebrate a housewarming party. Here the construction of a huge complex of buildings intended for the Federal Intelligence Service of Germany (BND) ends.
On Monday, March 31, in the already commissioned logistics center, the first 170 intelligence officers will enter their new offices. This, in fact, is the vanguard of German intelligence, who is entrusted with ensuring the smooth transfer of all the others from the picturesque and secluded Bavarian town of Pullach to the much more hectic capital of Germany.

At the hand of the chancellor

The German government made the decision to transfer BND from Pullach to Berlin back in April 2003.

The ministers, and above all the chancellor himself, whose department coordinates the work of all German special services, wanted intelligence to be at hand. In case of unforeseen events, such as, for example, now in Ukraine, they would have the opportunity to quickly and directly consult with people who know.
The new complex of buildings for BND is actually adjacent to the government quarter. The Chancellor’s office is only a kilometer away. Some of the service employees have long been in Berlin, but they are located in the Lichterfeld district on the southern outskirts of the city. In general, about four thousand German intelligence officers are scattered throughout the country. So we decided to collect them under one roof.

Berlin's second largest building

On office premises for BND, it was decided not to save. An area of ten hectares was allocated for the complex. Earlier, in the days of the GDR, there was the "World Youth Stadium".

On this site, the construction of an office complex ends with a length of 283 meters, a width of 148 and a height of 30 meters. There is only one building in Berlin, which is even larger. This is the Tempelhof arched airport, built back in the 30s of the last century, closed for air travel several years ago as a result of a referendum held in Berlin.
The BND's Berlin headquarters, according to intelligence agencies on its website, will have 5,200 rooms, including 3,300 office rooms. The building has 14 thousand windows, 12 thousand doors, it laid 20 kilometers of fiberglass cables and 10 kilometers of copper.
Souvenirs from BND
The initial estimate for the construction of the special facility was 720 million euros. But, as is often the case with communal architectural projects, this money was not enough. In 2011, the amount was increased to 811 million, and in 2012 - again, to 912.4 million.

One of the reasons for the increase in costs is increased security measures during finishing work. The builders needed an eye and an eye. The customer was worried that an agent recruited by foreign intelligence might not be among them, who could fill the interior with bugs.
In addition, along the way, on the south side, they decided to build another school for intelligence officers and the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, as well as a boarding school for them, a cafe, a visitor center with a store where BND souvenirs will be sold.

Face control at the entrance

But the figure of 912 million is not final. After all, there are still two thousand employees from Pullach to pay for moving to Berlin - with belongings and household members.
So experts proceed from the fact that ultimately the government’s desire to have intelligence at hand will cost German taxpayers at least 1.3 billion euros. Pullah, by the way, is absolutely not orphaned. There will remain a technical intelligence center with staff of a thousand people.
Berlin headquarters BND equipped with the most modern equipment. Its core will be the operational information center inside the building with a full-wall monitor. Agent reports or, for example, photographs from satellites will be displayed on the screen.
At the entrance to the building will be installed computers that know each intelligence officer "in person." It will be possible to go inside only after scanning the exterior, as well as handing over a mobile phone and laptop to the storage chamber.
