Avoiding car fraud
November 4, 2007
Acquaintance with the car begins with an external examination of the body. Novice sellers believe that various moldings, stickers and other bells and whistles add coolness to the car. But this trick skips only with those who know little about cars. I will say right away that the true goal of all this rubbish is to "hide" a car. For example, how to check the condition of the thresholds if they are hidden under plastic overlays?
Acquaintance with the car begins with an external examination of the body. Novice sellers believe that various moldings, stickers and other bells and whistles add coolness to the car. But this trick skips only with those who know little about cars. I will say right away that the true goal of all this rubbish is to "hide" a car. For example, how to check the condition of the thresholds if they are hidden under plastic overlays? A knowledgeable person will try to get around such a car. So if the car has a solid body, then all this junk is better to remove. But various minor scratches, chips of paint that are not of fundamental importance can be left behind. But at the same time, just in case, a plausible legend should be prepared.
At the next stage of the inspection, the buyer usually begins to open and close the doors, hood, trunk. The sophisticated one is immediately alarmed if on an almost new car the hood and doors do not close immediately or for this you need to make an effort. Cracks in the glasses, various shades of paint, different markings of glasses, brake lights, headlights and even turn signals will add doubt.
Then comes the time to inspect the engine, chassis. And here, many novice "car dealers" make annoying mistakes. One of the most common is the indefatigable desire to twist the odometer. But in order to figure out the actual, and not “ostentatious" mileage of the car, it is enough for the connoisseur to examine the wear of the brake discs of the front wheels.

Another misconception: the presentation of the car gives a perfectly clean engine. But it is unlikely that the dock will believe that the engine after two years of operation or a run of 30-40 thousand kilometers is pristine. This mistake is often superimposed on another: novice sellers, having paid at the sink for bringing shine in the engine compartment, do not pay attention to the appearance of the chassis. And this discrepancy - a perfectly clean engine against the background of scabs of mud, oil on the nodes of the undercarriage - immediately alarms a man who thinks a little bit. And it’s absolutely wild when, having cleared the engine parts that are striking from the dirt and oil residues, the seller forgets about the nooks and crannies of the power unit. Dirt, oil and grease in these places eloquently indicate that the seller has something to hide. And experts, believe me, will not ignore these corners.

In a word, during pre-sale preparation, attention should be paid to these far-reaching little things, but, most importantly, not to overdo it. I will say from experience that the most advantageous are cars in which the engine and chassis are clean, but not to a mirror shine. And the car itself also has a small operational coating of dust and dirt.

As our consultant complained, there are more and more knowledgeable buyers on the market and fewer suckers. Perhaps because the inexperienced, not relying on their knowledge, are asked to help their more experienced friends in choosing a used car. And they’re doing it right!

If the appearance on the car market of a person who is little knowledgeable in automotive matters becomes a rare gift of fate for resellers, then the presence of a woman next to such a “burdock” is simply fantastic happiness for market patrons. As a rule, representatives of the beautiful half of humanity pay more attention to color, various gadgets: power windows, music, chairs, covers. And at the same time their word for some reason becomes decisive in choosing a car. “So when such a couple appears, I try to work for a woman,” our consultant admitted.

But to wait for favors from fate means to sell nothing. Therefore, communicating with a possible buyer, you need to tactfully and delicately prevent him from concentrating on the inspection, diverting his attention, gently stopping attempts to look under the car. In this case, the usual trick is to pay attention to some trifle, a scratch, with a story of the corresponding legend explaining its origin.

It should turn out confidentially and play a decisive role. (From the author: more than once I heard that the dog allegedly scratched the car. It seems that all sellers on the market have some particularly harmful dogs that consider spoiling the owner’s cars as meaning.)

“When a customer inspects a motor for a demonstration, I always have a half-bottle with expensive imported motor oil,” our salesman continued.

And finally, another piece of advice: the composition of any legend should be taken very seriously. Once our hero was asked how much oil a car is eating. And he’ll take it and blurt it out: “Yes, it drove through the probe, but when I replaced it, everything passed.” The buyer was blown away by the wind - he turned out to be one who understands cars well (the fact is that if a probe is knocked out, then at best it means that the crankcase ventilation system is clogged, and at worst it is a sign of an impending engine overhaul) .

We hope that this material will be useful not only to those who sell the car, but also to those who decide to buy a second-hand car.
