"Cracker" iPhone take on the service
How legal is the use of such equipment in Russia
03/14/2018, 19:09

Russian special services will be able to crack smartphones of any model. The BBC Russian Service examined the public procurement portal and found that the regional departments of the Investigative Committee, the FSB and the Ministry of Internal Affairs had acquired the development of the Israeli company Cellebrite. The manufacturer claims that their technology is able to steal data from any mobile device, including iPhone. How it works? And can an ordinary person buy such a system? About this - Ivan Yakunin.

Judging by the public procurement website, intelligence agencies became interested in a device called UFED Touch2. It looks like a regular tablet, via USB a smartphone is connected to it, a button is pressed, and the system copies photos, correspondence, in general, everything that it can find. The regional department of the Investigative Committee Kommersant FM refused to comment on their choice, explaining that this technology helps to solve serious and especially serious crimes.

Russian intelligence agencies have used Cellebrite systems before. In 2016, the head of the UK Alexander Bastrykin said that the product allowed to open a case of smuggling Brazilian pork in the Crimea.

Large departments and private detectives are the main customers of the Israeli company, however, as Kommersant FM found out, anyone can buy such equipment. One of the official distributors said that UFED Touch2 will cost 850 thousand rubles.

“We would like to know for what purpose you are purchasing the device and what organization you represent. It can well be ordered by an ordinary person. If he does this on his own behalf, then we only need to know his name, phone number and email address. The bill is paid at the bank, and literally in 20 days the equipment will be at the customer’s hands, ”one of the companies said.

Cellebrite, by the way, has competitors, and their proposals seem more profitable. The American company Greyshift also claims that it can crack any smartphone, but you do not need to buy an expensive installation for this - just send the iPhone to them and then get it back with all the data.

Russian law does not regulate who can use this service, Cisco Internet Security Consultant Alexei Lukatsky notes: “Equipment, as well as software designed for investigations, is not prohibited for sale in the Russian Federation.
-------------------------------------------------- --------------
This can be compared to the trade in table knives, which can be used for completely different purposes.
-------------------------------------------------- --------------
Such installations can, for example, be used quite actively by corporate services. The seller, unfortunately, cannot know in advance for what purposes his equipment is purchased. ”

By the way, such developers are actively supported by the FBI - Apple does not share encryption keys with security officials, which is why, according to media reports, they regularly resort to hacking services.

In January, FBI forensic expert Stephen Flatley publicly called Apple “morons” and “evil geniuses.” He said that by his actions the company is constantly complicating the work of his colleagues.
