Nokia 7 Plus smartphones passed data on their owners to China
Finnish company HMD Global, which develops and sells devices under the Nokia brand, was convicted of the fact that its smartphones transmitted data about users to China.
The first to talk about the problem was [URL='https://nrkbeta.no/2019/03/21/norske-telefoner-sendte-personopplysninger-til-kina/'] NRK (“Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation”), which received a “tip” to this story from a simple user. According to NRK, smartphones collected information about their owners each time they turned on, unlocked, or turned on the screen. Among the data collected were GPS coordinates, network information, device serial number and SIM card number. This information was then transmitted to a Chinese server on the China Telecom network. Moreover, it is still unclear who exactly belongs to the server on zzhc.vnet.cn.
Finnish edition Helsingin sanomat reports that HMD Global representatives explained the data collection was a mistake in the code. Allegedly, in the firmware of the devices, they accidentally forgot a certain activation tool intended for use in other countries. The company also reported that due to this error only a small number of Nokia 7 Plus smartphones were affected, and HMD Global has already removed this code from the device firmware.
NRK believes that the code responsible for collecting the data was written around 2014. Since one of the sub-directories used by the "spyware" tool is called China Telecom, the researchers suggest that the code was really intended for devices sold in China and related to local data collection requirements.
It is interesting that an ordinary Twitter user reported suspicious traffic related to zzhc.vnet.cn back in January 2019, but then this message went unnoticed by anyone.
