On Friday, the German Prosecutor General's Office issued a press release. In it, without a name and nationality, it was said about the capture of two people. It is also reported that the accused are suspected of long-term espionage against Germany in favor of a foreign intelligence service. How long espionage activities lasted and for what intelligence, the message is not specified.

But the German press disseminated information about the personal data and activities of criminals. Spiegel Online reports that it is a "Russian spy pair." The defendants allegedly have been working for the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service for more than 20 years. Austrian passports were found on both suspected spies upon capture. According to the passport data, Haidrun A. was born in Peru, and Andreas A. - in Argentina. However, according to Spiegel Online, investigations by intelligence agencies in South America did not confirm this information.

Germany’s internal intelligence services allegedly drew attention to them after the discovery of the Russian intelligence network in the United States. According to Focus, the couple was in constant contact with Russian Anna Chapman. And according to Stern magazine, the shortwave frequency was regularly used, according to which spies from Germany and the USA regularly exchanged messages. An official from the German Prosecutor General’s Office on Sunday declined to comment on the press report for the WG. Any additional information can only complicate the investigation process, he stressed. Only by adding that his hands are “tied”.

- It is completely unclear what kind of espionage the arrested couple in a provincial town could engage in. Where they lived, there are no military factories, no NATO facilities, no missile bases, or influential political institutions. This, by and large, is a city of students, where there are universities, some kind of scientific structure associated with them, and that’s all. There’s nobody to recruit. Recently, statements appeared in the media that the arrested woman passed on the secrets of car production to Russia. This is generally funny. German cars are already being assembled in Russia, and there are more expensive German cars in the Russian Federation than in Germany itself. The arrested did not conduct any espionage work and could not conduct it.

I suspect that the KGB brought these people back to Andropov to Germany, and then forgot. There is no real smell of espionage there. I can assume that Russian military intelligence may be interested in some military issues related to NATO, but where the arrested couple lived, it is simply impossible to do this.
