Here, I found:

Closed Open Press Information
S. DZHENIBEKOV
In April, the Moscow City Court on charges of high treason sentenced an employee of the Institute of the USA and Canada Igor Sutyagin to 15 years in prison.

The investigation proved that he passed on to representatives of the Alternative Futures firm Seann Kidd and Nadeu Locke the information that constitutes state secrets. It is established that this company is the "roof" for American intelligence. I. Sutyagin, in particular, for a substantial sum, informed company representatives about the upgraded MiG-29 fighters and “vulnerable points” of Russian military equipment.
Sutyagin’s lawyers do not deny these facts. However, they insist that their client “did not transmit any information other than published in the open press” and therefore cannot be convicted. This issue caused a discussion in the media: is it really possible to consider a spy a person who, it seems, did not commit anything reprehensible except analysis of open information.
Open press processing is known to be an important element in the work of any self-respecting intelligence. Experts believe that at least 80% of the useful information obtained by special services falls on open print. During the Cold War, the “most readable” newspaper abroad was the Red Star. Extracted - sometimes with great difficulty - factory production runs were in particular demand. Analysts drew a lot of “useful” information from these sources.
At one time, the CIA historian Sherman Kent set up a curious experiment. He invited five professors at Yale University to prepare a report on the state of the US armed forces, the number of combat units and formations, and the strength of the Navy and the Air Force, while allowing only open sources of information. The work lasted no more than three months. The report of scientists corresponded to the true state of affairs by 90%. The CIA immediately classified the results of this study, dubbed "the world" called the Yale Report. Thus, it was proved that with appropriate processing, seemingly harmless information can be transformed into top-secret information that constitutes state secrets.
Of course, extracting the necessary information from open sources - unlike the classic undercover methods - is not associated with risk and dangerous adventures. However, it is naive to think that analytical work is a pleasant walk in a well-kept garden. It involves “shoveling” a huge amount of disparate information, gluing logs of logical construction from extracted grains on one or another problem. In addition, enemy analysts also do not sit idly by and often skillfully put “disu” into the information circulation. And one more thing: as follows from the experiment of Sherman Kent, for successful work in this area it is desirable that the skills and abilities of the analysts themselves are not much inferior to those possessed by professors from Yale University.
The advent of the world wide web of information, the Internet, has qualitatively changed the concept of analytical processing of open sources.

UPD
