Cellebrite, a maker of tools for hacking mobile devices, has blocked a number of functions in its software package, depriving customers of the ability to unlock iOS and Android devices on their own. According to 9to5Mac, to unlock devices, customers must send them to the company.
Cellebrite offers hardware and software that allows you to unlock smartphones and extract the data stored in them. Initially, the company supplied technology only to law enforcement agencies, but subsequently expanded services to the private sector.
Last year, Cellebrite's business was hit hard after Signal messenger developer Moxie Marlinspike analyzed Cellebrite's software and reported vulnerabilities in the tool. Marlinspike managed to hack the tool and inject a file that prevents data from being extracted from the iPhone. Cellebrite promptly fixed the vulnerabilities and announced the addition of a function to hack Signal, however, the company soon deleted the message.
According to experts from one of the information security companies, Cellebrite currently does not have the ability to unlock iPhones and smartphones on current versions of Android. Now, to unlock smartphones, customers must send them to Cellebrite for a $4,000 service fee (per device) under Cellebrite Advanced Services (CAS). According to the information on the company's website, CAS applies only to law enforcement agencies, but according to 9to5Mac, private companies can also use the service.
However, the Cellebrite tool can still extract information from already unlocked devices.
