On October 28 (November 10), 1917, a resolution was passed by the NKVD of the RSFSR "On the Workers' Militia". The holiday began to be celebrated since 1962, after the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of September 26, 1962.

Since 1980, the Day of Soviet Police began to be considered an official holiday, in accordance with Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR No. 3018-Hot on October 1, 1980 "On Holidays and Memorable Days", as amended by Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR No. 9724-XI of November 1, 1988 of the year “On amendments to the legislation of the USSR on holidays and memorial days” [1].

The name of the holiday changed after the collapse of the USSR and the entry into force of the Law of the Russian Federation “On Police” dated 04/18/1991 N 1026-1: Soviet Police Day became the Day of Russian Police.

After the new law “On Police” entered into force on March 1, 2011, the name of the holiday was outdated again, and on the eve of the next holiday date on November 10, Presidential Decree No. 1348 of October 13, 2011 established a new holiday - Day of the employee of the internal affairs bodies of the Russian Federation [2 ] [3].
