And history is known to be repeated.
PHRASE "History repeats itself twice: the first time in the form of tragedy, the second in the form of farce"
Erroneously attributed to K. Marx.
The source is the words of the German philosopher Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel (1770–1831), which K. Marx himself points out in his work “18th Brumaire of Louis Bonaparte” when he quotes this Hegelian thought, accompanying it with his reference: “Hegel notes somewhere, that all the great world-historical events and personalities are repeated twice: the first time as a tragedy, and the second as a farce. "
Used literally.
