Spies recognize passwords by key sounds

American scientists have developed a program for recognizing the sounds of pressing keys on the keyboard. The program records the sounds accompanying the printing process, and recreates the text that the user typed. Scientists from the University of California at Berkeley, USA, presented a program for recognizing sounds that accompany typing on the keyboard. As a basis, the developers took the idea that all the keys of the keyboard when pressed "sound" differently. The sound produced depends on the location of the key on the keyboard, the type of keyboard, the strength of the press, and the position of the hands of the printer. The base of sounds obtained by pressing different keys by different people is stored in the program memory. The program records the clatter of the keyboard keys and compares the record with the base of sounds. The main features of the new software are the ability to self-learn and knowledge of the lexical laws of the language. To get acquainted with the "keyboard handwriting" of a person, the program takes five minutes. During this time, the user must type on the keyboard a coherent text that complies with the norms of the literary language. After such an exercise, the program will successfully recognize any sequence of characters - including the password. If it was not possible to recognize a single character, the program will find the word in its dictionary and insert the missing letter. The Economist predicts that the program will be a success with computer attackers, since special equipment is not required to steal a password.
