The administration of the social network "VKontakte" signed a memorandum of cooperation with the League of Safe Internet.
This was reported in a press release received by the editors of Lenta.ru. According to the document, VKontakte will begin a centralized fight against pornographic content. The main burden in this area will fall on the so-called "cyber-warriors" - voluntary members of the Safe Internet League. Cyberdrugs will look for pages with illegal content and transmit information about them, as well as about users who uploaded videos, to law enforcement agencies.
“This segment attracts pedophiles more than others, since in addition to illegal videos and photos there are profiles of real children and adolescents,” says Konstantin Malofeev, chairman of the Safe Internet League, on the situation with pornography on VKontakte. According to the LBI plan, the social network should be cleared of child pornography and other similar materials by January 1, 2012.
The representative of "VKontakte" Vladislav Tsyplukhin doubted that cybercriminals will be able to eliminate all illegal content on the social network. "Naturally, it will not be possible to completely eradicate illegal content, but our task is to make the life of users who want to post it as uncomfortable as possible," RBC daily quotes Tsyplukhin.
Previously, VKontakte refused to centralize content moderation. Representatives of the leadership of the social network said that certain materials are deleted only after receiving an official complaint from a user or a request from the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
Various public associations have repeatedly pointed out a large number of pornographic materials (including child porn) on VKontakte. In particular, at the end of March 2011, several large Runet managers signed an appeal to the social network administration with a request to introduce strict filtering of content downloaded by users.
In early May, VKontakte general director Pavel Durov published an article in which he called the claims on VKontakte unfair, noting that pornographic materials are much easier to find on Yandex and Google search engines. This, in turn, caused a negative reaction from search engines. Yandex and Google published essentially similar statements in which they denied Durov’s accusations, assuring that they were fighting illegal content and, unlike VKontakte, were not directly hosting it.
VKontakte is the largest social network in Russia, with about 100 million accounts registered in it. The Safe Internet League was established in March 2011 with the support of the RF Ministry of Communications. It included representatives of the largest telecom operators (Rostelecom, MTS, Beeline, Megafon, etc.), mail servers, companies specializing in information security, as well as members of the State Duma of the Russian Federation and employees of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
