The court noted that the death of the agent was not related to his professional activities.
The Westminster Coroner Court did not find sufficient grounds for qualifying as the murder of the mysterious death of MI6 employee Gareth Williams in London in 2010. This was announced by coroner judge Fiona Wilcox, announcing the verdict following a hearing on the causes of Williams' death.
In the morning at the final meeting based on the results of the seven-day hearings, the judge stated that she did not have enough evidence to unambiguously qualify the death of the 31-year-old intelligence officer as murder. She added that she even wanted to postpone the verdict in order to give more time to study the newly revealed circumstances of the case, but then decided to put the conclusions about the circumstances of the death of the man into a narrative verdict. His announcement took about two hours. The hall was attended by relatives of the deceased.
“It is unlikely that satisfactory explanations for his death will be found at all,” the coroner judge said at the beginning of the verdict.
However, towards the end of the announcement of the conclusion, she recognized that death as a result of asphyxiation from lack of oxygen or poisoning is most likely.
“I admit that the cause of death was unnatural. I can’t unequivocally reach the verdict of“ unlawful killing, ”but based on a balance of probabilities, I can assume that it was the case,” she said.
The judge could not name the motive or immediate cause of death, as well as the identities of outsiders who could be present in the apartment on the night of the death of MI-6 employee.
The coroner supported the arguments made during the hearing by MI6 that the death of Williams was not related to his professional activities.
"There is no evidence that Gareth died at the hands or at the hands of a colleague from the Secret Intelligence Service," Wilcox confirmed.
The lawyer of the family of the deceased, in turn, expressed disappointment with the reluctance and inability of the special services to provide the investigation with all the necessary information. He also called on the head of Scotland Yard to take personal control of an investigation into the new circumstances of the case.
Representatives of the London police did not exclude that the investigation could be resumed in the light of newly discovered evidence.
Recall that the naked body of Williams was found in August 2010 in a fastened gym bag in a bathtub in his apartment in central London, not far from MI-6 headquarters.
The autopsy did not allow to determine the exact cause of death of the 31-year-old cryptographer of the GCHQ intelligence processing center, seconded to MI-6. It was found that death occurred on August 16. From the very beginning, the case was surrounded by a halo of mysterious assumptions - from the “Russian trace” to careless killing as a result of sexual games.
