From the end of the 18th century, Islam began to spread among the Circassians and the Circassogais (Mountain Armenians) were threatened with the loss of their national religion. At the end of 1836 they turned to the head of the Kuban line, Major General Baron G. F. von Zass, with a request “to take them under the protection of Russia and give them the means to settle near the Russians”. In 1837, under the leadership of a Russian general, on the left bank of the Kuban, against the village of Prochnokoopskaya, a small village of mountain Armenians arose.
In 1839, the Circassogayev settlement moved closer to the mouth of the Urup River. This year is considered the official date of the appearance of Armavir, the original name of which was the Armenian village. The aul was surrounded on three sides by a deep ditch 2.5 meters wide and a rampart. From the fourth side the Kuban River flowed, which became the natural border of Armavir. The boundaries of the settlement changed several times due to the fact that more and more families moved from the mountains. In the early years, 120 families settled in the aul, and by 1840 their number increased to four hundred. In addition to the mountain Armenians, several hundred serf mountaineers lived in the settlement (in 1859 there were 753 of them). The life of the Circassogai in the new place proceeded according to the same laws of the tribal life, which they adhered to in the mountains. The village was divided into quarters, in which they settled with families that came from the same villages.
